Your first ride: clip in without the nerves

Everything a first-time rider needs at DOSE — arrival time, shoes, bike setup, and what actually happens in the room.

Riders on Keiser bikes in the DOSE Fitness spin room

Bring your magic to the bike, and see what all the hype is about.

A first spin class can look like a lot from the doorway: bikes, shoes, lights, music and a room already moving. At DOSE, the goal is simple — get you set up properly, explain what is happening, and let the music do the rest. Spin is open to all levels, and every new rider is set up by the instructor before class begins.

Come 20 minutes early

DOSE asks all new clients to arrive 20 minutes before class starts. That time is for check-in and waivers, renting shoes, using the restroom, filling a water bottle and meeting your instructor. It also gives you room to breathe before the first song instead of rushing in while the room is already clipped in.

At check-in you will find your spot on the bike map, grab a towel and meet the instructor. If you have an injury or an area that needs attention, say so now — not halfway through a hill.

Shoes: SPD, not sneakers

All riders clip into SPD pedals. If you own spin shoes, bring them. If you do not, rentals are available at the front desk. The instructor will help you clip in and check that the bike is set up for your body before class starts.

Saddle height, handlebar position and clip tension all matter more than they sound. A two-minute setup can be the difference between a strong ride and a tweaky knee. Ask for help; that is what the 20 minutes are for.

What to bring

  • Water. If you forget, water is sold in the studio.
  • Comfortable, sweat-wicking clothing you can move in.
  • Spin shoes if you have them; rentals are at the front desk.
  • A towel is available at check-in.

What the ride feels like

Classes run 45 or 60 minutes. You ride to the beat through heavy hills, out-of-the-saddle jogs, sprints and choreography. The room has Keiser bikes, a top-of-the-line sound system, air conditioning and killer lighting. Every move is in sync with the music, and the instructor coaches the whole room together.

It is loud. It is a party on a bike. You do not need to know the choreography before you walk in; the instructor coaches the room, and modifications are always available.

How hard should you go?

Resistance is yours to choose. The instructor will describe the shape of the ride — a hill, a sprint, a jog — but the number on your bike is your call. Start lighter than you think you need, especially in the first class, and add resistance when the movement feels stable.

Modifications are always available, and telling the instructor about an injury before class is the fastest way to get one that works for you. No one is watching your resistance dial. The room is watching the music.

If you feel lost in the choreography

You probably will, at least once. Choreography is a layer on top of the ride, not a test. Keep your resistance steady, stay with the beat, and take the simpler option when the instructor offers one. Everyone in the room learned the same moves the same way, one song at a time.

If you need a break, sit up, breathe and keep the legs moving. Rejoin on the next chorus. No one is grading your choreography, and the first class is about learning the bike, the room and the way the music works.

After the ride

Cool down, drink water, and give yourself credit. If your week includes strength or a lot of time at a desk, yoga is the recovery dose that balances the ride. If you loved the cardio, come back; if you are not sure, the Dose Finder can point you to the next room.
